Formulating policies and provide overall direction of the activities within the unit on the basis     of the work programme and priorities of the directorate and the DG. Programming and organising the correct functioning of the unit, including management of human resources (co-ordination with HR unit, job description, appraisal, skills gaps identification, training, coaching, etc.). Representing the Unit, Directorate, Directorate General or the Commission in meetings, working groups, or other forums. 

Ensuring the achievement of the Unit’s strategic objectives:

• a high level of animal health and animal welfare protection;

• implementation of the new Animal Health Law, in particular the timely adoption of the delegated and implementing acts in accordance with the better regulation guidelines;
• • implementation of the EU's animal health and welfare legislation;
• implementation of the Regulation on Animal Breeding, in particular the timely adoption of the delegated and implementing acts in accordance with the better regulation guidelines;
• maintenance and development of legislation on animal by-products;
•  raising of awareness among stakeholders and the development of international cooperation in the area of animal health and welfare as well as breeding of animals;
• ensuring good cooperation with the EP and Council and attendance of relevant meetings in these institutions;
• Member of the Animal Health Emergency System for DG SANTE

Seconding the Head of Unit when appropriate and acting Head of Unit when required. Fully involved in the management tasks of the unit such as the elaboration of the Unit Management Plan. Following policy developments in the SPS field at the EU, international and multilateral levels relevant to the Commission’s responsibilities in the area of the Codex Alimentarius, SPS Committee and BIPs. Ensuring that the EU participation complies with legal obligations and that EU interests are actively supported and advanced in negotiations with the other parties. Identification of key issues of interest to the EU and preparation of the appropriate strategy to ensure that these interests are supported. Organisation and co-ordination of the EU representation in the Codex and other multilateral fora. Acting as Head of Delegation and Spokesman for the European Union in Codex. Negotiations with EU Member States, trade partners and stakeholder organizations on Codex standards. Following external representation matters following the Lisbon Treaty.

Head of Delegation and spokesperson for the EU in the Codex Committees for Fats and Oils, Fish and Fishery Products, Pesticide Residues, Food Additives, Methods of Analysis and Sampling, Contaminants in Foods, Natural Mineral Waters, Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Coordinating Committee for Europe, ad hoc Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance, Food Hygiene, etc. Directing policy in the SPS field at the international and multilateral levels, relevant to the European Commission’s responsibilities in the above committees of the Codex Alimentarius and in subsequent discussions in the Codex Commission.

Audits of veterinary services in the EU Member States and third countries as lead inspector or member of the inspection team in the Animal Health field. Evaluation of eradication programs and contingency plans for infectious diseases and on-the-spot checks on their proper implementation. Emergency missions following outbreaks of animal diseases with an impact on trade (e.g Foot and Mouth Disease).
